Project Description
The Johnson Ferry/Abernathy Road widening project is a joint effort between the City of Sandy Springs and the Georgia Department of Transportation. The completed roads will have multiple lanes, a raised median, bike lanes and sidewalks.
Project Status
Construction began on one of the busiest east-west routes north of the Perimeter in 2008. The project is approximately 60 percent complete and is on schedule for a late 2012 completion date, weather permitting, according to GDOT. Work continues on the widening portion of Abernathy, with curbing scheduled to take place in early August. The major item of work presently scheduled is the superstructure of the new bridge. Concrete deck pours are taking place and the remaining sections of deck are projected to be complete the week of August 8, 2011, weather permitting. The next major traffic shift to the new bridge is projected to take place in late fall of 2011. After the traffic shift to the new bridge, refurbish work on the existing bridge will begin.
Roswell Road Bridge Over I-285
Project Description
The project will include the construction of additional width on the northbound side of the existing bridge. This will allow for two, 11' wide, northbound and southbound travel lanes as well as a full, 11' wide, dedicated left turn lanes onto entrance ramps for I-285. Additional width to the westbound and eastbound on ramps for I-285 will be constructed to accommodate dual ramp meters and additional storage capacity. Short sections of concrete raised median are also proposed at both ends of the bridge to improve operational circulation.
Project Status
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) conducted the preconstruction meeting with the contractor on July 26, 2011. Bridge construction will begin after the first of the year and utility relocation activities will be taking place in the interim. Progress of the utility relocates will determine the construction start date. The contractor has developed a value engineering proposal that is in the process of review by GDOT. The progress schedule is being completed by the contractor for submittal to GDOT. The City of Sandy Springs requested a courtesy copy of the schedule so that milestone construction activities can be tracked. GDOT contract value of this project is $3.5 million.
